The authorship of the order Enoplida has been a source of confusion in the nematological literature. Although the name Enoplida is often associated with Chitwood's classification and has occasionally been cited as Enoplida Baird, 1853, the origin of the taxon traces back to the classification proposed by Filipjev (1929).

In his seminal work The classification of freeliving Nematoda and relations to parasitic forms (1929), Filipjev established the group Enoplata, using the suffix -ata then employed for nematode orders. The concept, circumscription, and diagnosis of the group were therefore introduced by Filipjev.

Subsequently, Chitwood (1937 - p.78) revised nematode classification and adopted the standardized zoological ordinal suffix -ida, resulting in the name Enoplida. Although Chitwood used the corrected spelling at ordinal rank, the taxonomic concept remained that originally established by Filipjev. Under the principles of zoological nomenclature, a change in suffix required to conform with later rank-ending conventions does not transfer authorship of the taxon.

Chitwood (1937) explicitly recognized both Order Enoplida Chitwood, 1933 and Suborder Enoplata Filipjev, 1929 within his classification. Later, Chitwood (1960) cited Baird, 1853 in connection with the superfamily Enoploidea, a reference that appears to have contributed to the subsequent but erroneous attribution of the order to Baird.

For this reason, modern authorities and databases attribute the order to its original author and concept, citing the taxon as Enoplida Filipjev, 1929, with Enoplata Filipjev, 1929 representing the original form of the name prior to adoption of the standardized ordinal suffix -ida. [details]
